That Some Blues
A new course taught by Colleen Savage.

An exploration of the song form that underlies so much of our jazz and popular music. It's the soulful, moanin', cryin,' struttin', jumpin,' pleadin' and praisin' feeling that ignites our personal response.

We'll start with the most basic three chord 12 bar form and sing our way through several variations of blues structures. We'll sing blues tunes in major and minor keys, in swing and 'Latin' feels, happy blues and sad blues, old folksy blues and newer jazzy blues. We'll work melodies, harmonies, riffs, shots and bass lines with repertoire ranging from Ray Charles and Etta James to Monk and Miles.

Bring your ears, heart and guts.

BC Swing Camp Bursary Benefit concert July 10th.
Was a wonderful success. The first half was performances by students and faculty, including Jennifer Scott, Michael Creber, John Lyon, Reuben Gurr, Artie Devlin, Daphne Roubini, and Andy Smith. The second half featured a swinging combo led by Rueben Gurr, with Michael Creber, Bruce Clausen, Paul Bergman, and George Hamilton. They backed up ten wonderful vocalists who sung their hearts out. Thanks to everyone who joined us...

A great time was had by all and we were able to raise enough to help several other deservikng participants attend this years camp!

Congratulations to amazing guitarist, Bill Coon, for being named “Guitarist of the Year” at the 2009 National Jazz Awards "Bill Coon is one of Canada's great treasures, a master improviser on the guitar, currently living in Vancouver, BC., He is a Juno nominated guitarist/arranger/composer who has performed with many of the great musicians of our time . . ."
There’s a great photo of him on the first page of his site: www.billcoon.com
